History
  • Grand Traverse Pavilions consists of five primary components: Grand Traverse Medical Care, Intergenerational Community Center, Grand Traverse Pavilions Foundation, The Cottages: Adult Residential Community, and the Aquatic/Wellness Center.

  • The Pavilions is the only intergenerational nonprofit continuum of care community north of Grand Rapids.
  • The Pavilions opened on June 4, 1998, with 201 residents in Grand Traverse Medical Care, and approximately 50 children in the Intergenerational Community Center. Adult Day and Overnight Respite Services were also available. Assisted Living was introduced in the Fall of 1998, adding 32 residents. Renovation on The Cottages began in 1999 and was completed in 2002 with the Aquatic/Wellness Center opening in 2002.

  • Although the planning process for Grand Traverse Pavilions began in 1990, that vision became a reality in 1994 with the approval of a 20-year millage to construct and equip the project.
  • Prior to a new name and location, The Pavilions was identified as Grand Traverse Medical Care Facility, located at 410 South Elmwood, Traverse City.
  • Grand Traverse Medical Care Facility opened in July of 1959 as a replacement facility for the 22-bed Boardman Valley Hospital. It was the first facility of its kind in the state of Michigan.
  • Grand Traverse Pavilions currently houses more than 300 constituents: 221 residents in Grand Traverse Medical Care, and 12 in assisted living-dementia. Additonally, there are more than 40 children in the Intergenerational Community Center Child Care Services and daily guests in Adult Day Services and Overnight Respite Occupancy at The Cottages is at capacity with some 77 tenants in suites and apartments.

  • The second phase of development for Grand Traverse Pavilions encompassed the restoration of three historic 19 th century structures adjacent to Grand Traverse Pavilions. Commonly referred to as “The Cottages”, these three stately buildings offer studio and one-bedroom apartments as well as individual suites.

  • Since its inception, Grand Traverse Pavilions has been operated by the Grand Traverse County Department of Human Services Board and owned by Grand Traverse County.
